Men of Brahm Hill, Book 1

Coming October 1, 2013

Kane, Brethren Guardian and one of the few Natural Shape-Shifters left in existence, survived the bloody battle of Brahm Hill but lost two of his closest friends. For all of his good-natured sarcasm and eye-popping good looks, Kane finds himself unable to completely forget about that night, so he seeks comfort in the one thing he is truly good at . . . sex!

This shape-shifting bad boy believes in having a good time—a very good time, usually involving some mingled heavy breathing with a sexy Dhampir in a tiny closet somewhere. But when he’s sent into the freezing tundra of the Northwest Territories to investigate a troublesome supernatural being on the loose, he ends up crossing paths with a woman who almost instantly drives him insane with want . . . because she doesn’t seem to be falling for the shifter’s charms.
It’s completely inexplicable.

Skye Matthews has a job to do, and she needs to be focused on that, not spending all her time rebuffing the advances of this way-too-cocky and handsome stranger. Yet, there is something irresistible about this self-involved playboy that Skye can’t seem to stay away from. And when the unidentified Kane is sent to investigate takes an unnatural interest in her, protecting her becomes the Guardian’s top priority.

Is Job Choice As Important As Name In Defining A Romance Hero?

Thanks so much for having me to visit today! According to an article at, the top five most popular “jobs” for a romance book hero are:

1.       Doctor
2.       Cowboy
3.       Boss
4.       Prince
5.       Rancher

There are more jobs listed in that article, but these are the topfive. And I found it interesting that nowhere on their list was one of my favorite hero jobs – the fireman. I wonder why?

When I was planning who would be strong and “heroic” enough to match Aphrodite, goddess of desire in the game of love, I immediately thought of a group of firefighters. Heroes who would risk their lives on a regular basis to keep others safe. I know there are lots of other professions out there that are equally heroic (and I’ve discussed that in an earlier post on this blog tour), but in terms of trying to find the right job to define my three heroes and their gallant yet troubled nature, I automatically went with fireman.

As an author, I know that naming my book “babies” is important in being able to convey a particular type of character, personality or look. My hero Flint, in PANDORA’S GIFT, for example, was easy to name. He was in my head for quite a while, and every time I pictured him, I could that sense that cold, hard core:

“Flint. It was such an appropriate name, she almost laughed out loud.

There was a hardness to him, both physically and metaphorically, that spoke of stone. An iceberg, she’d decided only minutes earlier. But that hadn’t been quite accurate. Ice could be melted. Stone could not.

This man was pure granite.

But when it comes to profession, that’s another thing altogether, and to me in some ways it defines a person more clearly than does their name. Parents choose your name for you, but your career? That is in your own power to decide, and therefore, could be more reflective of your personality. In IMMORTAL SEDUCTION, I wanted to show that my three gorgeous heroes are both “heroic” and yet damaged emotionally, and I felt that making them firefighters would be perfect to show that juxtaposition of strong alpha hero who is in desperate need through no fault of their own:

“It was not your fault, Ashur.” She followed him when he shook his head and tried to step back. She was good at doing that, he was beginning to realize. She slipped her arms around his waist as if to hold him in place, and cradled her head in the hollow of his shoulder.

Damn annoying woman. But his arms came up to hold her in return. “You weren’t there,” he said. “You don’t know.”

She sighed and her breasts pressed into his chest like living cushions. Her fresh perfume wound through the room, reminding him of the herb garden at the rear of this property. He’d stumbled into it one night early on, before he’d taken to walking the beach, and been assailed by oregano, and rosemary, and mint. Other exotic spices were there too, but he had no idea what they were. He could smell them all and more in Aphrodite’s breath and in her hair, and it was an intoxicating aroma.

“I see it in here.” She cradled his face in her hands and tapped a light finger at his temple. “I relive it every time you do. As do your friends over there. And you owe it to them to start putting this behind you at last. It’s not about trying to forget. Nor about moving on without heart or soul. It is time to begin the healing process.”

“I owe it to them?” He glanced toward Kieran, who’d been with him in a threesome that night and who’d driven with him to the incident when they both got the text message. And Hugh, who’d been alone at home, oblivious to the unfolding tragedy until he’d turned up for his shift the next day.

Was his behavior contributing to their grief? Was his black despair destroying these two men as well as himself? The answer was evident in their stricken expressions as they sat thigh to thigh on the edge of the bed and stared back at him.

“So, I have that to answer for, too?”

Folk Charms and Folk Magic in BEWITCHED

Congratulations to "Alexis G." the winner of Sandra's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated.

"Bullock's heart pierced with large nails & thorns, found in a chimney in a farm in Somerset, placed there to cause harm to s.o."

This intriguing object – a brownish lump stuck with various nails and thorns – can be found in one of the display cases in the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. There the bullock's heart is in good company, for it is surrounded by several other objects stuck with nails, thorns, or both: a shrivelled sheep's heart, a shrivelled pig's heart, an old onion, and, perhaps most fascinating (and revolting!!!) of all, the "object said to be a toad, stuck with thorns for withcraft purposes." By now, all that remains of the poor toad is something that looks like a blob of molten tar with various pointy bits sticking out of it.

Clearly, folk magic is not for the faint of heart.

All these objects give us a fascinating insight into the beliefs and superstitions of people in the past. Such beliefs survived particularly long among the common people in the countryside, where they were recorded by folklorists and anthropologists in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many folk charms reflect the worries of farmers and fishermen, who were dependent on the goodwill of Mother Nature: lucky stones were buried in gardens and on fields to ensure a good crop; and the fishermen of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, never went out to sea without a few tiny bone models of fish in their pockets.

Many of the folk charms I saw in the Pitt Rivers Museum in 1998, when I spent three weeks at a language school in Oxford, are referenced in my romance Bewitched. After a magical mishap that turned her uncle's house blue, Amy, my heroine and a real-life witch is stripped of her powers and sent to Regency London in order to be introduced into polite society – and to find a suitable husband. Throughout the story, the "real"magic – the powers Amy has lost, the love potion that makes her fall in love with a man she has detested at first sight, the evil forces that follow her from London to the Fenlands, where they threaten all she holds dear – are contrasted with simple folk beliefs and folk charms. Thus, Amy happens to be present when a kitchen maid lays out her plans on how to stake a slug:

"I lets it crawl over me skin 'ere. Look." She waved her hand in front of the cook's face. "'Ere. And then all I needs ta do's stick the slug onna thorn. And as soon as the slug's dead, the wart'll be gone!" she ended triumpantly.

The intended fate of the poor slug reminds Amy that for real magic you don't need to torment a hapless animal:

Instead, it was all a matter of skills and talent. And concentration. Of course, there was the accident with the portraits and, even worse, the accident with the frog. But that had been years ago, and her cousin Coll had been just thirteen and believed he could transform the frog into a prince. After all, you always heard about how it was done the other way around, didn't you? Amy's nine-year-old self had found it endlessly entertaining to wade through the ponds on the estate with her horde of cousins hunting frogs. However, the entertainment value of the experiment had rapidly sunk when they later were all covered with sticky blobs of frog remains. Transforming a frog into a prince had turned out to be slightly more complicated than they thought.

If you ever happen to be in Oxford, pay a visit to the Pitt Rivers Museum and look for the glass jar containing a black (now white) slug impaled on a thorn.

By the way, this was how I learnt the word slug back in 1998.

Congratulations to "Alexis", the winner of Danita's giveaway. Thank you to all who particpated!

It is such a pleasure to be here with my new paranormal romance Love Entwined! Today I want to share a brand new excerpt with you. But first, let’s talk about dreams. Sometimes they are just random moments in your life that have left an impression on you. Very often, your innermost fears are processed through dreams. They can be frightening. They can be prophetic. For Amelie, dreams are these things, and more. A doorway through time to a tragic love she doesn’t remember, and a man which time will not allow her to forget.

Have you ever had a recurring dream? Do you take note of your dreams to help you solve your concerns? Leave a comment and your email address for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card.

Opening the sketchpad to the first page, she focused on the sketches she’d drawn and was already so proud of. He would love them. “I think the canary diamond with sapphire accents is very dramatic set in yellow gold.” She flipped through several pages, pausing to give him time to imagine what she saw so clearly in her mind. The man who stumped her with an answer to everything had become very still. Mr. Cardiff was staring at the sketches. “You don’t like them?”

“Where did you get these?” he asked.

“I drew them.”

Mr. Cardiff picked up the sketchpad. “You mean you created them?”

“But of course I created them. They are mine.”

“Do you remember ever seeing anything that may have given you the idea?” Now he was staring at her.

She stood up. “Mon Dieu! I do not copy designs.”

Mr. Cardiff stood and took her by the shoulders. “It’s just that these designs look so much like the family heirlooms.”

“How dare you accuse me of this?”

“Amelie.” Mr. Cardiff rubbed warmth up and down her arms with large, but gentle hands. Goose bumps rose where he touched her.

“I didn’t mean to upset you.” His hands stroked her bare back, and she shivered.

She closed her eyes at his deep, soothing tone and there was a moment of vertigo when his hands moved around her waist, drawing her closer. She could feel him lean toward her, knew his lips hovered over hers, beckoning. She was on the edge of a cliff, where her fantasies waited so far below. One move and she would be in her dream, in that lamp-lit cabin. If she lifted her chin, their lips would meet, and she would fall.

She tilted her chin up. Mr. Cardiff did the rest.

Warm, full lips moved over hers in that confident ownership that was in his every move. She leaned in to the languorous slide of his tongue against hers. This was her dream.

She looked into his eyes and Mr. Cardiff picked her up against his chest. Her legs dangled in the air as his mouth traveled over her, suckling her neck, licking the cleft in her collarbone, searching, and finally finding the sensitive spot between her breasts.
It seemed he was trying to reach her soul. He did.

She fell over the cliff’s edge.

The Keeper

I never thought of my debut novel, The Keeper, as a romance novel in any way. But, I came across this quote: “Where the pursuit of extraordinary love, romance and passions is first and foremost” (Paranormal Romance Guild).

Then I started thinking about how that relates to my book. I’d told my more squeamish friends The Keeper was horror lite (no hard core frights, no gore; just a little dark and paranormal). When I heard it called Urban Fantasy, I thought that sounded a bit closer. Paranormal Romance doesn’t quite fit the bill either. But I kept going back to that quote.

Doesn’t every book have an aspect of romance? If you don’t have love, romance, or passion, you don’t have much. As a reader, I love falling in love with a character. As a writer, I try to bring that into my fiction.

One of the first characters I’d ever fallen for was Wolf in Stephen King’s The Talisman. To this day the thought of Wolf and his big pumpkin-colored eyes, his unwavering loyalty (his love for his best friend Jack), and his ultimate demise still breaks my heart and nearly brings me to tears. When I fall in love with a character, it inspires me to develop characters in my fiction that readers will love.

I had aspects of Wolf in mind when I wrote about Olivia. She’s the caretaker in a family of werewolves, and utterly devoted to them as a mother figure. She finds passion with Paul, the one man in her life who understood her and loved her for who she was, not in spite of it. I fell in love with Olivia not because she’s an interesting character in a unique situation and endures some hardships. But because she loves the people in her life with such passion and devotion. Because she’s willing to go to extreme lengths to protect the people she loves the most. Because all she wants is to be loved.

I, as a reader, don’t care about characters who don’t love. I can’t pull for them while they endure tragedies. I just don’t care about them. Without characters who pursue love, romance and passion, you don’t have much of a story, regardless of genre.

Love doesn’t just make the world go round. It makes for great fiction too.

I Need A Hero!

I need a hero!

Does anyone remember that Rock n Roll song by Bonnie Tyler from the eighties? I only remember belting out the chorus—badly— at the top of my lungs. The rest of the lyrics had no meaning because I had already decided what my hero would look like.

He’d be tall, handsome, and rich, all the prerequisites of a romance hero. Twenty plus years and hundreds of romance novels later, I’m rethinking my definition of hero.

We always tell our daughters, and ourselves, that looks aren’t everything. It’s what’s in the person’s heart and how he treats you. Yet, the lure of the hard-bodied, bad attitude, bad boy, populate romantic literature and our real lives.

Be honest, how many times have you fallen for the bad boy, until heartache and wisdom showed the error of your ways. I, too, am a culprit and victim of this particular affliction. Mind you, I say this with a nostalgic smile. I remember that car ride and the front seat. <wink>

Nearly every romance writer wants her hero oiled up with a six pack. But why aren’t there any smart, geeky types on the most wanted list?  Cupid’s Arrow shouldn’t discriminate. As a writer, I’ve pondered this. Not that I’ve considered having one as my main hero, but why haven’t I considered one? Is it taboo? Are you less likely to fall for him if, instead of muscles and height, he had a deck of cards and a rash? That may not be a good analogy, but you get my drift.
In real life, it’s not the classic portrait of a hero that saves the world. In real life, Superman is the doctor that saves your child’s life. Batman is the detective that solves a thirty year old mystery. And Wonder Woman is every working mother.

Let’s face it, where would the world be without Gates, Jobs, Spielberg, Edison, and Einstein. All are or were giants in their chosen fields. All have made significant contribution to humanity. All were nerds.

In this present day, as America grows fatter, and more slovenly, the studly example of male virility will be harder to find in everyday life. Should romance novel reflect real life?
My answer is hell no!

Romance novels are the best form of escapism. It’s legal voyeurism into another world, another life, another time. And I happily wallow in every decadent word.

But, I can’t help casting a secret ballot for the nerd. Maybe, I’ll write one where the hero isn’t Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, or James Bond. But Jeffrey, the slightly overweight, grubby t-shirt, converse sneaker wearing, techie who just happens to save the world and get the girl without closing his laptop.

Coming to an e-book soon. <wink>
