The Lone Wolf Takes A Mate Blog Tour

GIVEAWAY Alert!

McQUADE:  The Lone Wolf Takes A Mate

McQuade Jenner was a lone wolf.

He didn't need some antiquated idea of one mate for life messing up his perfect bachelor lifestyle. On any given night he could find a biker groupie–human or shifter–reckless enough for a one-time fling  with a wolf. He could bed a woman when he felt the need and go home to the solitude he enjoyed. And that's exactly what he'd intended to do the night Rose Spencer walked into his life–alone, wet, and trouble just waiting to happen. He’d never intended to get involved with the innocent Rose–she was a life-time commitment and McQuade didn't do commitment. But what was a wolf protector supposed to do when the woman his wolf wanted was threatened by a low-life lion shifter?

Rose Spencer wasn't the bar-scene type. She'd never have stepped foot inside the shifter bar unless she’d been trying to protect her sister–again. When would she learn that Alice was quite capable of taking care of herself–and that she was the one suddenly in need of protection?

This is a title intended for mature audiences only.

EXCERPT:
Rose realized she’d made a grave mistake the moment she’d opened the bar’s metal door. Inside were roughly fifty men, and a handful of women. And not one of them was Alice. Why did that not surprise her? She’d probably already found a ride home, having hooked up with some other loser. Who else would she find in a biker bar?

Rose knew how to size up people, especially men. As an emergency room nurse, she’d learned that lesson quickly. Some of the men in the bar were humans but most were shifters. They were all big, bad men. And not in a sexy way. Well, maybe one of them was. The one lounging in a chair toward the back was quite possibly the handsomest man she’d ever seen—a ten in a room full of zeroes. He was smokin’ hot. The quick glance she’d had of his chiseled face and muscular arms had almost made her lose her breath. Everything about him was dark–from his hair and skin to his shirt and jeans. Not to mention the aura surrounding him. He was the epitome of tall, dark and handsome… to say nothing of dangerous.

Immediately her mind went there, wondering how all that testosterone would feel unleashed on her. She wasn’t very experienced but she wouldn’t even mind if he liked it a little rough. The thought of what else he might like sexually had her panties soaked in seconds.

Indigo Awakening - Psychic Powers

The real phenomenon of Indigo children inspired my 2-book series, the Hunted. Indigo Awakening (book #1) is already out and book #2 Crystal Fire is my upcoming release (November 26, 2013) with Harlequin Teen.

Query ‘Indigo Child’ on the internet and you will be surprised how many hits you will see. There are those who believe that the next evolution of mankind already exists and walks among us now. But in my series, I super-size the Indigo psychic abilities and wanted them to evolve into more than one simple power per kid. With Indigos sharing a “hive mind,” I thought it might be possible for their abilities to grow and change once they came in contact with each other. So below is a list of psychic abilities that I drew from initially. Imagine what it might feel like to have any one of these abilities. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Apportation - Materialization, disappearance, or teleportation of an object
Aura reading - Perception of the energy fields surrounding people, places, and things
Automatic writing - Writing produced without conscious thought
Astral projection or mental projection - An out-of-body experience in which an "astral body" becomes separate from the physical body
Bilocation or multilocation - Being in multiple places at the same time
Clairvoyance, second sight - Perception outside the known human senses
Death-warning - A vision of a living person prior to his or her death
Divination - Gaining insight into a situation via a ritual
Dowsing - Ability to locate objects
Energy medicine - Healing by channelling a form of energy
Faith healing - Diagnosing and curing disease using religious devotion
Mediumship or channeling – Communicating with spirits
Precognition, premonition and precognitive dreams - Perception of events before they happen
Psychic surgery - Removal of diseased body tissue via an incision that heals immediately afterwards
Psychokinesis or telekinesis - Manipulation of matter or energy by the power of the mind
Psychometry or psychoscopy - Obtaining information about a person or object
Remote viewing - Gathering of information at a distance
Retrocognition - Perception of past events
Scrying - Use of an item to view events at a distance or in the future
Telepathy - Transfer of thoughts or emotions
Transvection - Bodily levitation or flying

Since the idea of man’s evolution is a key concept to my series, I wanted some of the powers to start simply, but get complicated as the kids develop to their full potential. Gabriel Stewart is my central character for this metamorphosis, but here is more about the powers I use in the book.

Indigo Children/Indigo Warriors - For the purposes of fiction, I make Indigo kids more plentiful, with the status of a Crystal child more unique and powerful. Indigos are highly intelligent intuitive teens who “feel” their way through life, trust their instincts above all else, and can often see angels and the dead. Indigos tend to be warriors. They have a fierce fighting spirit and a rebellious nature. They don’t accept things the way they are. They see how things can be. Indigo warriors can also be a little older than teens, those who have come before to pave the way and protect the Indigos who will follow. Gabe’s mother and his uncle Reginald are examples of early Indigo warriors.

Crystal Children – Crystal children are a higher level of power and attainment in the collective than Indigo kids. Only Lucas Darby and Gabriel Stewart reach Crystal child status in the series. They are the elite. Since Lucas is only fifteen-years old when he reaches this level, he becomes the obsession of the Believers. These church fanatics believe his “mutation” is more dangerous. He “turns” too early, so they think that Indigos are evolving more rapidly than they first suspected. They want to get their hands on the boy, to “study” him. Gabriel is eighteen and has been hiding in secret, off the grid, but he is far more powerful than even he imagines. Once he links to the “others” of his kind, he transforms into something amazing. He will be the most dangerous among these kids. In Gabriel, the Believers truly have something to fear.

Individual Indigo Powers – by Character

The Effin brothers are Indigo twins with the ability to attack the hypothalamus gland within the human brain. This gland affects the Four F’s – to feed, to flee, to fear, and to…hook up. As you might imagine, they can make anyone do anything with this ability, even though the twins think of their gift as a funny game. These boys are younger and very peculiar, even among Indigos. They only communicate telepathically, within their immediate hive, and they are most powerful when they are together.

Kendra Walker is an Indigo who is similar to a modern day Joan of Arc. She’s strong and rebellious, driven to protect the Indigos right to live. She has the ability to connect with other indigos, to draw them to her and track them, but only with a limited range and often with one-way communication from her to them. She is a healer and uses herbs and her garden to not only feed her street family, but she also hears the voices of “the others” through her plants, especially as she tends her garden.

Lucas Darby is an evolving Crystal child who has been stunted by his time locked up in a mental hospital. Drugs were used to control him and have taken a toll. His potential is similar to the gifts that Gabriel Stewart has, but Lucas also shows the ability to read other people’s memories. This psychic gift is called Retro-cognition. Crystal children tend to be more benevolent and peace loving by nature and Lucas is no exception. He’s at odds with Kendra’s warrior nature to protect her kind. Once he sees how far the Believers will go to destroy innocent lives, Lucas will be forced to take a stand he’s not prepared for, even if it means being an obstacle to Gabriel.

Rafael Santana is a street kid who communes with the dead and easily connects into the spirit world. He’s the heart and soul of Kendra’s Indigo family, a simple guy so desperate to have a real family of his own, that he takes on the role of big brother to an abused homeless kid, ten-year old Benny. Although Benny isn’t psychic, these two are inseparable kindred spirits. Rafe is beyond wishing anything for himself, but he doesn’t wallow in self-pity over how his life turned out. Instead he takes on the responsibility of caring for a young boy and no one comes between Rafe and Benny, not even Rafe’s beloved Kendra and her Indigo rebellion.

Gabriel Stewart is the most powerful Crystal child. He thought he was an Indigo, like his British mother, but after he meets Lucas’s sister, Rayne, and links to the collective hive mind through Lucas (another Crystal child), he is gripped by a metamorphosis that he can’t stop. He can connect his consciousness through animals and the dead, but his powers evolve into much more. I can’t say too much about his abilities without giving away strong elements to the story, but Gabe is seriously cool.

Two new characters introduced in Crystal Fire:

Oliver Blue is tortured by the Believers with sensory deprivation head gear and evolves into a teleporter. Frightening things happen to him as he tests his new abilities and he is brainwashed into betraying Gabriel and his own kind, manipulated by Dr. Fiona, the head torturer behind the fanatical church organization.

Caila Ferrie has the ability to manipulate memory (retro-cognition). She can virtually absorb someone else’s life by implanting their memories inside her, or she can plant a new past into those she touches. Her power carries a great deal of weight, as you might imagine. The memories she takes on soon overpower her own life and she forgets who she is or where she even came from. When she crosses Oliver’s path, their lives collide in a way that will change them both forever.

Hellboy is featured on the cover of Indigo Awakening and is Gabe Stewart’s ghost dog. He’s a portal to the “other side,” or is he?

In book #2 of the Hunted series – Crystal Fire –the stakes escalate when the dark side to having psychic powers emerges and the Believers tamper with science and human nature to battle something they should respect. So let’s chat about psychic powers?

1.) If you could have a secret Indigo power, what would that be?
2.) Have you ever experienced a psychic moment or do you know anyone who is a real psychic?

Top 5 reasons NOT to time travel to sixteenth century Scotland

GIVEAWAY Alert!

Top 5 reasons NOT to time travel to sixteenth century Scotland

5.) Toilets, or more importantly the lack of indoor plumbing attached to said toilets.

4.) Bathing wasn’t a priority to this time. The water on the land was flippin’ cold and being the youngest in a family meant you were never really clean.

3.) There’s no Internet, people. And most of the women didn’t read. Like at all. *shivers* I think that’s two reasons, but moving on.

2.) Feminine hygiene… *blinks* And babies without doctors or drugs… *blink-blink*  I think that’s two reasons, too. Onward!

1.) Kilts, brawny men who call you lass and make you ohhh so happy in the bedroom… *blinks*  Oh, wait. That’s a reason to travel in time. *blinks*

EXCERPT

1686, MacCoinnich Keep Scotland

Fighting with a sword ranked up there with having sex without an orgasm. Holding the damn thing took too much energy and the end-result was anticlimactic and messy. Kincaid’s free hand itched to pull any one of his hidden weapons from the pockets of his modified seventeenth century clothes and finish off his opponent. The man’s death was inevitable. He had no earthly prayer of taking Kincaid. Even without the use of Kincaid’s gift, the kilted Scot had two fatal flaws working against him. One, he underestimated his opponent, never a good thing in battle. Two, Kincaid’s Druid gift would prevent any fatal blow from reaching his skin. He was damn near immortal.

Kincaid missed being skewered by the Scot’s blade by lunging to his right and placing one foot on the edge of the Keep’s massive stairs. Above him, other men fought, some with powers, a few without. Preventing the ancient Keep from falling into any hands that didn’t belong to descendants of the original owners, wasn’t going to happen. These missions were planned and orchestrated with extreme caution and precision.
The Scot advanced again—sweat falling from his brow with the effort of the fight.

“Kincaid!” He heard his name from the floor above, but didn’t make the mistake of looking up.

“I’m busy.” He blocked his opponent’s sword again, locked the man’s free arm, and attempted to pull it behind his back.

Kincaid was rewarded by taking an elbow in the ribs and having the wind knocked from his lungs.

“Finish him already. We need to move on.”

Moving on was his queue that their time was nearly up.

“I guess…” He shoved the Scot a foot away and lifted his sword high. “That means we’re done here.”

“Your confidence will be your downfall,” the Scot said.

Kincaid motioned the man forward. …said the spider to the fly…

The Scot advanced with a surge of strength and determination.

Kincaid held his ground, threw up his Druid shield, and watched as shock filled the man’s gaze when his sword bounced off the shield and opened him up for Kincaid’s final blow.

Killing never sat well with him. But he was a warrior and killing was part of his soul. Damn shame that.

Kincaid heard his name called again, and he took the familiar stairs two at a time to reach the others. From the corner of his eye, his gaze met a painting on the wall, one he’d not seen before.

His steps faltered as he connected with the haunting gaze of the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Didn’t matter that the painting was one dimensional, or that the woman was most likely dead…even in this century. He did a quick inventory of the other images on the walls and recognized only one. The same painting hung in that very space on the wall, so many years in the future. But this one…the picture of the woman with her long dark hair and pained focus as she attempted to smile, beckoned him. This painting he’d never seen.

“Kincaid! Dammit man, get your ass up here!”

Kincaid shook away the woman’s soulful gaze, bounded up the stairs, and trailed his band of men up the spiral staircase of the turret.

As they moved to the privacy of the bricked room, he noticed the small face of one of the Keep’s youngest occupants watching from behind an adjacent door.

Rory moved to close the door when Kincaid motioned toward their witness.

The child, a girl not more than ten years old watched with wide eyes. She didn’t appear frightened in the least.

“Is she…”

Rory lifted his hand, palm up, and from it, a small ball of fire swirled from nothing and hung suspended.

The girl’s wide eyes lifted and a small smile inched at the side of her lips. She lifted her hand and a sputtering of fire sprang from her fingertips.

Kincaid felt his pulse dip as he lifted his finger to his lips “Shh,” he whispered with what he hoped looked like a friendly smile.

Noise from the long staircase met their ears. Rory ushered them inside and closed the door. Before the noise from below became another battle, Kincaid closed his eyes, lifted his shield, and spread it over his small party…then he began to chant and time slid away.

The Transformation of Anna - EXCERPT

Cole unstopped the slender vial and gently lifted Anna’s head to administer the potion. As he carefully tipped the container to her lips, tremors traveled down his forearms. His hands quaked. The amber liquid jumped to the brim and he quickly tilted it upright. Gods, Cole, control yourself. She needs every drop.

A soft palm rested on his wrist and Cole’s gaze shot to Elaina’s. When had she returned and how did he not pick up on the strong compassion emitting from her when she had? Her blue eyes looked deep into his, understanding with a touch of sadness. “Let me do that, Cole. You’ve been through enough.”

He wasn’t sure if the tremors were from anticipating a fortunate outcome or from sheer anxiety over the whole ordeal, but he accepted her tender attention as a blessing. Vincent’s intervention with her was evident. He watched as she patiently poured small measures into Anna’s mouth
.
Elaina turned to Cole and lifted the emptied container. “Well, that’s it. She got it all.”

He sighed. “Thank you.”

“Anything, Cole.” She smiled and set the vial on the bed stand. “What about you? Can I get you a drink? It might calm you some.”

Nodding, he offered a small smile.

“Good, then. I’ll be right back.”

As she closed the door behind her, Cole eased himself onto the bed. “Don’t give up, Anna.” His faint words were swallowed by the silence of the room. “I’ll fix this and see to it nothing ever happens to you again.” Brushing his fingertips over her hair, he solemnly whispered a plea. “Don’t leave me.”

Her soft locks sent countless memories rushing through his mind—her smile, cheeky comments, blue eyes dancing as if life itself was a game. Her Arylinite spirit embraced every moment of love, able to see beneath fa├žades that others deemed as truth. He sighed, knowing that side of her may have been unique to that lifetime—a result of her specialized upbringing in the Arylin colony of the northern territory.

He tilted his head and gazed over her still face. Her features were remarkably similar to Mianna’s. The gentle slope of her nose, the way she chose to wear her dark hair long, and he couldn’t deny her blue eyes when she’d looked at him. He cupped her cheek with his hand, gently stroking her lips with his thumb. They curved from a bow-tie center into a natural smile. So soft. Inviting. He leaned to her and lightly kissed them, then leaned his cheek to hers.

“Talk to me, Anna.” His breath was a plea. As much as he knew no answer would come, his heart called to her with his deepest wish.

He brushed his fingers down her neck to her chest, tenderly caressing her pale skin at the neckline of her gown. A strained pause caught his throat as he lightly followed her breast to her ribcage. “What’s in your heart?”

The tiny circles he drew on the thin fabric fed his longing for her touch. Supple creases followed his motion. To have her arms around him, the love they brought, had given him unmitigated comfort in a past life. It could be so again.

“My life was yours.” He kissed the circles he created. “Every moment, I found joy in you.”
He looked at her closed eyes. “Please, don’t leave me. Please promise you’ll be mine again.”
No emotion showed upon the visage of his love, but distant echoes of vows lighted his soul.

“Open to me.” He wondered if his whispered thought could possibly reach her unconscious mind. “Speak to me with your soul.”

Her lips parted and a chill flew through him. He waited, listened intently. Weak sensations touched his senses. “Anna,” he said aloud, hope rising. He cupped his palm to her cheek again. “Fight for it. Call to me.”

Anna remained silent.

Cole’s heart ached. Yet, that small reaction spurred his resolve. He framed her face as he lowered to take her lips with his. “I’ll help you.”

The scent of licorice and cream fell from his lips as he called on his Breath of Zephyr. His soul’s voice owned his words. “My life is a mirage of endless time. But you engulf me, rivet my mind, encompass my soul.”

She inhaled his sensual gift and gasped for deeper intake.

Yes. Hope impossibly filled him. His muscles tightened with expectation. His heart pounded against his chest. “Call to me!”

Echoes
Cornerstone Deep, #2

Nothing is sacred to Cole when it comes to keeping his love – not even covenants made with gods, and when Lord Dressen's obsession to have Anna soars, Cole pulls out all the stops.  But, through all his efforts, lofty or damned, the truth remains.

Will echoes of another life cause him to fail?

“Every breath you take is a song to my soul.”

ECHOES Excerpt

Sweet lavender greeted Cole as he entered the solarium. Tiny bobbles glowed from beneath the garden foliage, allowing the stars to wink through the wide skylights in the ceiling. He scanned the dark sky and an all-to-familiar longing for the five moons in his home realm returned. It was suddenly too dark in Cornerstone Deep, too repressive—a reminder of the deceit this plane bred.

Dragging his hand across his face, he released an uneasy breath. His father had been taken by greed. Just as his own standards had diluted to the point of performing acts that defiled ancient covenants. But if Sylis Shilo, a born Meridian and revered Sentinel, had succumbed to Terran influence…

Cole lowered his gaze as justification shadowed his acts. We were deceived. You had no right. The facts seethed in his blood. His father longed for his wife. How many times had he influenced her feelings? And how much of her desire was truly for Cole and not a result of emotional tampering?

His stomach knotted. The senior wizard had even suggested the charm created for Mianna. Unsigh. One heart—the ultimate sharing of passion. He had aided in its creation and in Cole’s desire to please his new bride, he had embraced the idea with his whole heart. I was a fool. It would have only made it easier for the master to read the emotions she shared.

Cole smoothed back his hair and paced a circle to expel anxiety. Surely, he would have felt betrayal in his love’s heart if there was desire for another man—especially when the spell joined their hearts…surely.

Adoration flowed from behind him, touched his senses. Slender hands smoothed his shirt to his waist and a soft form leaned to his back. His heart melted and he closed his eyes. Mianna. Despite his attempt to avoid an earlier meet, he couldn’t resist. He lifted his arm and turned to hold her in his embrace. As she met his gaze, Mianna’s soul once again spoke to his as none other had or would. Unrest fled. Doubt disappeared.

Her brow wrinkled with worry. “You’ve been distant.”

He brushed her long hair with a gentle stroke. “I’m sorry, my love.”

She caressed his forehead with her fingertips, erasing the tension there.

“Hush thy worries. Still thy mind.
For within mine arms,
love’s sweet bliss will heal thy soul.
Cares of life be gone.”

Cole rested his cheek on her soft locks, allowing her poetic tongue to soothe him.

“Whispers, wings of love’s caress,
light upon thy heart.
Gazes, speak of my soul’s want.
Body, sing their praise.”

She gently placed her hand to his cheek, guiding him to look into her eyes.

“I long. I pray thee touch me.
Carry forth my will.
Leave behind the world, my love.
Be this moment mine.”

Cole’s heart wrapped around her plea and the reality of her return filled his being. She was his. Now and forever. “This moment, my life, my existence is yours.” He cradled her face with his hands. “Every breath you take is a song to my soul.”
